Certified Therapy Dog, Inc. (CTD) Policy Update Concerning Dual Membership, Privileges and Insurance
Effective as of March 30, 2026
Certified Therapy Dog, Inc. continues to flourish as a valuable contributor to the communities we currently serve and will expand to do so in the future.
With this comes the need to update our policies to ensure, as best as possible, both the safety of all involved and the continuity of our organization. It also requires us to revisit policies that require control over the liabilities and exposure we face so that we continue doing what we (all) love to do.
Previously, we permitted members to join, associate or participate with other organizations, including, but not limited to other therapy dog organizations, and where or with whom they visit. This was atypical of most therapy dog organizations, including many of the larger national organizations that are principally registries. Most other organizations typically do not have a training aspect to their operations; nor are they recommended by the AKC. They may test applicants and may provide insurance to their members during visits. Most do not have a network nor require preauthorization to visit, as does Certified Therapy Dog, Inc. Some organizations may partner with therapy dog organizations that have their own rules and regulations. This opens uncontrollable potential for liability.
Therefore, effective as of the date above, in order to remain a member of Certified Therapy Dog, Inc. and benefit from the privileges, access and insurance we provide, no member may join, participate, be at the direction of or associate in any way, directly or indirectly with other therapy dog organizations or entities that have what may have been or may be perceived as near exclusive relationships with other therapy dog organizations, individuals or the activities with which they engage. By doing so, membership, privileges and the insurance we would otherwise provide are immediately and permanently terminated; we accept no liability for any events that may occur. This policy also applies, regardless of whether the visit may have been, or becomes preauthorized by the Executive Director of Volunteer Services or President and Founder of Certified Therapy Dog, Inc.
Unauthorized participation, engagement, influence or interaction in any way or at any time with another therapy dog organization and/or its associated entities or individuals shall immediately and permanently terminate membership in Certified Therapy Dog, Inc. along with the privileges and insurance that we would otherwise provide.
For most of our members we realize this policy revision is entirely moot. However, to preempt and prevent any unwanted exposure or liability from becoming an issue, I hope and anticipate that you understand that its necessity results from the growing demand for the amazing effect you all have when you visit with your Certified Therapy Dog Inc. certified therapy dog.
The above supplements and does not replace the existing requirement that, to be included under CTD’s liability insurance, all visits made in connection with Certified Therapy Dog, Inc. must be preauthorized by the Executive Director of Volunteer Services or President and Founder of Certified Therapy Dog, Inc. Other exclusions, limitations and conditions apply.
